TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORKPLACE

So in one of my other speech classes we have been discusses whether or not the use of multiple technologies in the workplace are beneficial to workplace productivity and communication. In some aspects I believe that IMing, using company telephones, and relying on webcamera interaction can be a huge benefit to the company. It allows for instant communication between the employee and the employer. But where do we draw the line to working and free time. And can introducing these things cause employees to become less productive if the right rules and regulations have not been put into place? Tell me what you think?

  1. I think that whichever way the companies can be most efficient with the technology around them, then they should use it. I think that viewing at a spreadsheet all day can make you lose focus in the project, as well as losing interest, so then I think that they should get an hour a day to unwind by leaving their work and viewing sites that can excite their mind.

Maybe a company IMing system would be beneficial so that they can share ideas, or ask questions at a faster rate then walking across the room. This can make the company more efficient, and in turn bringing in profits.

  2. Nice post, Andie. I think rules and regulations specific to the usage of personal time in the workplace add the necessary checks and balances to keep employees on task and earning their pay. I do think in the end the proof is in performance. If people can get their jobs done while multitasking, why not? If personal usage of any medium is excessive and not specific to the job--whether using the phone, IMing, or chatting with coworkers--the person's value to the company is reduced. With the right intentions and a solid work ethic those same behaviors facilitate getting some jobs done well and more quickly.

PS--Those look like Titanic hands! :)

  3. I agree, nice post Andie. I think the jury is still out on the ultimate effect of the new communication technology on productivity in the workplace. I was talking to a guy who is responsible for communications technology/telecomm services for a huge downtown bank at a party not long ago and he suggested that a lot of staff at the bank are being overwhelmed with e-mail to the point where it is disrupting their work and making them less productive. Not only that, but a lot of important e-mails are going unanswered because the people who should be looking at them are distracted by irrelevant messages. He's working a "routing" protocol that will ensure that staffers only have to deal with e-mail that directly relates to their job function and are spared meaningless announcements or messages that don't really effect them. A big job...
